OSAN AIR BASE, South Korea – After two days of sports, activities and games, 35th Air Defense Artillery Brigade raised the coveted Osan Commander’s Cup at Osan Air Base, Republic of Korea Sept. 30.
Col. Mark Holler and Command Sgt. Maj. Eric McCray, 35th ADA Brigade, spoke candidly during multiple staff meetings on the significance of bringing the cup back to the brigade after a year hiatus with the Air Force.
“We play to win,” said Holler. “We were deliberate and disciplined when we set our lineups. We have a lot of talented Soldiers, and we matched their unique skillset to each event.”
The brigade is spread across five different bases on the Korean Peninsula, and Soldiers converged on Osan Air Base from neighboring Suwon Air Base, Kunsan Air Base and Camp Carroll to join the brigade headquarters in competition.
With 19 different scored events, ranging from soccer to darts, and CrossFit to video games, the 3rd annual Osan Cup provided an array of activities to garner the attention of even the most reserved service member.
Despite the tough competition in the large unit category, 35th ADA Brigade took 10 first place finishes, and placed in four other events.
In the overall scorecard, 14 teams representing the small and medium sized brackets rounded out the field of 22. The brigade took home six first place finishes, and placed in a total of nine different categories.
One of the most dominating showings was in CrossFit, where 35th ADA Brigade took first place in both the men’s and women’s division, for the large group and overall competition.
“With CrossFit, it boils down to discipline,” said Capt. Katrina Muchmore, 35th ADA Brigade. “It’s sometimes hard to find time to get in the gym with unit exercises and the high operational tempo, but I think that’s what made the difference for me, my discipline to make time for the gym.”
When the final scores were tallied, 35th ADA Brigade won the overall cup with 16,885 points, outpacing the second place team by more than 5,000 points. To illustrate just how dominate 35th ADA Brigade performed, only five points separated the second and third place teams.
