SAN FRANCISCO – Amphibious transport dock ship USS San Diego (LPD 22) arrived at Pier 30/32 today, kicking off the 36th annual San Francisco Fleet Week, which runs Oct. 3 through 10.

Royal Canadian Navy frigate HMCS Calgary (FFH 335) arrives Oct. 5. Guided-missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay (CG 53), along with U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Mellon (WHEC 717), arrive Oct. 7 for this year’s celebration.

More than 2,000 Sailors, Marines and Coast Guard members will participate in San Francisco Fleet Week 2016 to celebrate the rich history of America's naval forces and the Bay Area. The engagement highlights naval personnel, equipment, technology and capabilities with an emphasis on Defense Support of Civil Authorities exercises and medical operations.

The eight-day celebration offers the public an opportunity to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guard members. It also gives the public a chance to gain a better understanding of how military personnel support the national defense of the United States and freedom of the seas.

The event welcomes thousands of people for ship tours, live music, equipment demonstrations, a parade of ships Oct. 7, and air shows featuring the U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron Blue Angels, Oct. 7 through 9. Throughout the week, service members have an opportunity to interact with the local community, while participating in a number of community service projects and static displays.
U.S. 3rd Fleet leads naval forces in the Eastern Pacific and provides the realistic, relevant training necessary for an effective global Navy.
