YAVORIV, Ukraine – The Troopers of 6th Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division along with members of the Joint Multinational Training Group-Ukraine inducted 15 noncommissioned officers into the NCO corps here, September 30.

The NCO induction is the first step for the new noncommissioned officers as they start their journey along the leadership path.

6-8 CAV Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Oliver welcomed the new NCOs and recognized their accomplishments so far in Ukraine. He then addressed the responsibilities they will now have as the ceremony marks their transition into the NCO corps.

“As you prepare to walk across this stage to receive your induction certificates,” said Oliver. “ Take pride in what you have accomplished. For it is the personal pride and initiative that has allowed you to reach this point.”

Leading by example was emphasized as one of the major qualities of a good leader during the event.

According to Oliver, if leaders walk by an issue and do not correct the problem then they have just created a new standard. NCOs must seize every opportunity for individual growth and improvement.

The Soldiers got a chance to understand the meaning of their transition into the NCO corps. And Oliver expressed his confidence in them to shine beyond expectations as professional leaders.

“Assuming responsibility for the lives, health and welfare of Soldiers is an awesome mission. The ability to lead Soldiers is a privilege and should not be treated as an entitlement, of which I am sure you are all up to the challenge of becoming the greatest noncommissioned officers ever,” said Oliver.

Sgt. Mario Miller-Givens, a culinary specialist with 6-8 CAV, who was one of the newly inducted NCOs, expressed his gratitude for being inducted into the NCO corps.

“The experience is new and fresh, but overall I think it is going to be fun,” Miller-Givens said. “I just got promoted and my NCOs all believed in me to get to this level. I am very glad to be one of the inducted NCOs.”

Miller-Givens added, he will continue to focus on growing into a better leader on his path to becoming one of the most positive, and effective noncommissioned officers.

6-8 CAV is deployed to Ukraine in support of the Joint Multinational Training Group-Ukraine. Their primary focus is on direct training of Ukrainian land forces while simultaneously building an enduring and sustainable combat training center.
