CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. – Camp Pendleton hosted the first Million Thanks Golf Tournament for military service members and civilians from nearby communities at the Camp Pendleton Memorial Golf Course here, Sept. 30.
A Million Thanks was created in 2004 to send thank you letters to deployed active duty service members. The goal of the foundation is to give people a chance to give back to those who sacrificed so much for the country to keep their freedom, according to Patrick Gough.
“This golf tournament is to raise funds to support our military, and we do that in three different missions,” said Shauna Fleming, Founder of A Million Thanks. “We do that by writing thank you letters to active duty military serving overseas. We grant wishes of injured veterans and we fund scholarships for children of fallen military.”
The foundation will be presenting three quality of life awards to three wounded warriors in the Camp Pendleton Wounded Warriors Battalion after the tournament and one $10,000 scholarship for one son of a service member who gave their life in combat.
“A few years ago the foundation actually started to grow,” said Gough, Chairman of the board for A Million Thanks Foundation. “They took a look at the charter and decided they could do more. “
The foundation expanded from just writing letters to taking donations and starting fundraisers to grant wishes to wounded warriors and the families of fallen service members.
“This is our first golf tournament so we are honored to be here,” said Shauna. “We are grateful for all of Camp Pendleton’s help and all of the military here supporting it.”
