Marines conducted day and night courses of fire on the rifle range at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Sept., 21, 2016.
Throughout the course, the combat marksmanship trainers evaluated the Marines with 2nd Maintenance Battalion on how quickly and accurately they can acquire and eliminate the targets during tables 3-6.
“We’re out here conducting tables 3-6 courses of fire, which includes short range and unknown distance range both during the day and night,” said Sgt. Christopher Labrovic, a combat marksmanship trainer with the unit. “These courses of fire teach the Marines how to properly employ their M16 or M4 assault rifles as well as use their PVS-14 and PEQ-15 during the night portion of the range.”
A PVS-14 is a helmet-mounted monocular night vision device that provides Marines with superior depth perception at night. A PEQ-15 is a multi-function laser device incorporating visible and infrared aim lasers which allow for quick target acquisition during the night.
“The table 3-6 ranges get Marines more familiar with close quarters combat and moving while firing on the short range day and night course,” said Cpl. Derek Walker, a combat marksmanship trainer with the unit. “On the unknown distance range, it gets them to think about how far the targets are from them and how to accurately lay fire on those targets.”
During the unknown distance range, Marines worked around obstacles such as walls, make-shift doorways and ramps to better prepare them to return fire no matter the location or distance.
“It’s great training,” Walker said. “If anything we should be doing more shooting and more marksmanship training because every Marine is a rifleman.”
