Fifteen members from the CSG 15 team embarked the ship during the biennial exercise Valiant Shield 2016 to take a look at how CTF 70 operates in a joint environment, and at the end of the exercise, provide a certification recommendation to Seventh Fleet.
“CSG 15’s contribution to Valiant Shield is to help CTF 70, and the entire strike group, become more efficient, effective, and capable,” said Rear Admiral Ross Myers, commander, CSG 15. “We are providing training, mentorship, and best practices from across the Fleet in order to hone the skills that will make CTF 70 and Carrier Strike Group Five successful in whatever missions they are assigned.”
Throughout the exercise members from the CSG 15 team observed the daily operations of the strike group. The events conducted during Valiant Shield 2016 provided an ideal opportunity for the strike group to be evaluated.
“In today’s complex world, there are few, if any missions where the Navy operates alone,” said Myers. “Exercises like Valiant Shield offer invaluable opportunities for the Navy to work with our Joint partners in honing our Joint tactics, techniques, and procedures in order to ensure freedom of global sea lanes.”
In order to provide the final recommendation to Seventh Fleet, CSG 15 looked at all aspects of the strike group and accompanying joint forces.
“In the arena of warfare there will always be a need for a joint force,” said Myers. “Valiant Shield provides us the perfect venue to evaluate all of the coordination and execution required.”
The members from CSG 15 departed the ship at the end of the exercise, their meticulous evaluations complete and ready to send to Seventh Fleet.
Valiant Shield is a biennial, U.S. only, field-training exercise with a focus on integration of joint training among U.S. forces. This is the sixth exercise in the Valiant Shield series that began in 2006.
