BAGHDAD – Buildings are important part any culture, whether it is an office building, restaurant or a coffee shop. However, one of the most important buildings to any society is a building that will be used to give children a good education.

Leaders, local residents of the Karmah Nahia, northwest of Baghdad, gathered with Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, "Gimlets," 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, "Warrior," 25th Infantry Division, Multi-National Division – Baghdad, at the future site of the Mossab Bin Omer school for a groundbreaking ceremony, June 24.

"This project is very important to the children of this area, and for generations will have a good education. It is important to have the project in this area, the school is for (the children) and their children," said Sheik Larense, a local sheik.

The school is able to be built by the support of coalition forces and helps serve as monument of change in the area that was once plagued by terrorism. Now the community is able to build their school in safety of knowing that once the project is complete, the school will serve as a beacon of hope to the rest of the Karmah Nahia area and Iraq, he said.

For Gimlet Soldiers, the ceremony represents a beacon of change and reconstruction in the once war torn area of Karmah Nahia.

"This celebration bodes a bright future for the citizens of Eastern Karmah. The construction of the Mossab Bin Omer school really marks a major accomplishment of the local Tribal Council and Karmah Nahia working closely together to provide essential services to the citizens out here.

Without their hard work and dedicated selfless service to the people, this even would not have been possible," said Capt Jeffery Higgins, native of Jacksonville, Fla., and company commander for Company B, 1st Bn., 21st Inf. Regt.

Building of the school is planned for in time for the start of the next school year, and will serve as the sign of change and reconstruction in this area of Iraq.
