Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron will host the New River Information Fair/Marine Regatta/Chili Cook-Off on Marine Corps Air Station New River, Oct. 7.

The event is designed enhance the readiness of the families of Marines, Sailors and civilians by providing access to local resources available to them. The event will host approximately one dozen resource providers ranging from the American Red Cross to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society.

"Exposure to the multiple resources available to us as service members and their family members is vitally important," said Capt. Hyunhak Yim, H&HS operations officer and family readiness officer. "There are many Marines and Sailors that are not aware of the organizations that are already postured to assist them. From financial advice to career consultation, there are opportunities that are all around us. Leadership gains great benefit from this also as it further equips them to handle more diverse issues with their Marines."

Although the event is geared toward H&HS, other units and their families are welcome to attend to learn about local programs.

"We wanted to provide a fun atmosphere for both the Marines and their families to enjoy while simultaneously providing awareness to the local resources," said Yim. Our annual Chili Cook Off is another avenue for our unit to showcase its master chefs, bring more families to our event and encourage competition."

Marines will also go back to their amphibious roots and take to the water during the squadron’s annual boat race.

"The regatta has affectionately been renamed to a Marine Regatta," said Yim. "It is a morale event where each participating section within H&HS New River will ‘do more with less’ by creating an improvised boat out of recyclable materials and conduct an amphibious landing.

By encouraging competition and esprit de corps, we believe that more Marines will be receptive to the information fair."

In addition to learning about local resources, participating and bonding through competition, the Marines of H&HS will be raising money for their upcoming birthday.

"All proceeds from our fundraiser events will go straight to our Marine Corps Ball fund," said Yim. "The Chili Cook Off winner will claim (for their work section) the coveted ‘Chili Master’ trophy for one year before it must again be delivered to H&HS New River’s finest chili maker. The Marine Regatta will also have prizes—one for the most creative design, best theme and race winner".
