YAVORIV, Ukraine - Troopers of 6th Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division conducted company situational training exercises with Ukrainian Soldiers here, September 15.

The training event marked the first time Mustangs held a company STX with Ukrainian Soldiers as they approach the final week of training for the current rotation. The exercise is designed to train collective tasks, or a group of related tasks and battle drills, through practice and repetition.

The Ukraine Soldiers rotated through three lanes and cumulative events that tested all of their individual and collective skills that they have learned throughout the training rotation.

1st Lt. Nicholas VanTulder, a platoon leader with 6-8 CAV said the purpose of the training was to teach Soldiers how to focus and be effective on their individual tasks. The training reinforced the importance of their roles within a company and how to coordinate their capabilities, and understand how they add up to success on the battlefield.

One of the lanes focused on a company defense. During the training Ukrainian Soldiers established defensive positions and utilized their collective skills to repel an attack from a 20-man opposition force.

“As long as they are paying attention and they are in good defensive positions which they are, they should have no problem handling the size of that (opposing force) element,” said VanTulder.

Mustang Soldiers held an After Action Review with the Ukrainians, which focused on their performance standards. It gave the Ukrainian Soldiers a clear review of what happened, why and how to sustain the strengths and improve on weaknesses.

6-8 CAV is deployed in support of Joint Multinational Training Group-Ukraine whose mission focuses on building a sustainable and enduring training capacity and capability within the Ukrainian land forces.
