Story by Petty Officer 2nd Class Curtis Spencer

    Commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet

During Fleet Week, which ran September 8 to 15, attendees experienced ship tours, band performances, a Sea and Air Parade demonstration and various other events as well as they celebrated fleet week with members of the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy.

“San Diego is a huge military town, but unfortunately a lot of people don't get an opportunity to see what we do,” said Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Shane O’Brien, attached to Explosive Ordinance Disposal Group One. “Fleet Week gives a glimpse of all the Navy has to offer. This is an opportunity for the natives of San Diego and the military to come together as a community.”

Throughout the week, more than 10,000 visitors toured San Diego, Kidd, Coast Guard Cutter Sherman (WHEC 720) and Royal Canadian Navy Halifax-class frigate HMCS Winnipeg (FFH 338) where Sailors, Marines and members of the Coast Guard answered questions at static displays throughout the ships. In addition, aircraft including the UH-1Y Venom and the AH-1Z Zulu Cobra helicopters were on the flight decks to allow attendees to get an up close look of their specifications.

“I learned something new at every display,” said Justin Shores, a fleet week attendee. “I am happy to shake the hands of the people keeping us safe. I am so proud of them and grateful for all they do for this country.”

This year's fleet week also offered a sea and air parade, the first since 2008, and featured America-class amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6), Avenger-class mine countermeasure ship USS Champion (MCM 4), Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers USS Pinckney (DDG 91) and USS Sterett (DDG 104), Sherman and Winnipeg as well as several Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard aircraft and a variety of tactical demonstrations.

U.S. 3rd Fleet leads naval forces in the Eastern Pacific and provides the realistic, relevant training necessary for an effective global Navy.
