Aerographer’s Mate 1st Class Charles Barzon, Aerographer’s Mate 3rd Class Darian Noll, and Aerographer’s Mate Airmen Tayloranne Keele and Shon Azubike, were received a behind-the-scenes tour of the studio and meteorology department.
“It’s exciting to have these guys here with us today and hear what they do on a daily basis,” said Brad Wills, Fox Five weather anchor. “I think it’s much more important than what we do; it’s a complete honor to meet them.”
After meeting Fox Five crew members, the Sailors were able to view a live broadcast, followed by an extensive question and answer session with the meteorology staff.
“It’s great to see the tools that they use on their side, because it’s a lot different than the tools that we use,” said Barzon. “I was happy to have them share their insights with us, because we can all learn from each other on both sides of the community.”
For the junior Sailors, the experience presented potential future career opportunities.
“This experience was pretty unique,” said Noll. “You always question how your job differs between the military and the civilian life, so getting to see both sides of it showed what steps I can take post-Navy, if I wanted to get into this field. It provided me a broader appreciation of what I do in the Navy, because it’s easily translatable in the civilian field.”
The tour of Fox Five Studios was arranged as a part of a fleet week initiative to continue building the ties between the military and the local community.
“This opportunity was definitely eye opening for me, and it showed us a different aspect of weather forecasting that could prove important to our junior [aerographer’s mates] going forward in their careers,” said Barzon. “Getting to share what we do in the military with the community is a nice bonus, because as [aerographer’s mates] our job is to ensure that our assets underway and globally are being safely navigated.”
Fleet week offers the public an opportunity to meet Sailors, Marines, and members of the Coast Guard and gain a better understanding of how the sea services support the national defense of the United States and freedom of the seas.
