    30th Medical Brigade

YAVORIV, Ukraine – Soldiers from 30th Medical Brigade conducted field ambulance drivers familiarization with Ukrainian Soldiers at Yavoriv Training Area, Ukraine from Sep. 8 to 9, as part of a two-week train-and equip program.

The team of instructors consisting of medics and a mechanic from 557th Medical Company (Area Support) and 212th Combat Support Hospital began with classroom training of safety protocols, FLA inspection procedures, and hand signals to ground guide drivers prior to the Ukrainian Soldiers testing out their skills on the driving range.

The Ukrainian Soldiers used their new FLAs for familiarization and for the road test based on U.S. Army driving school standards. These FLAs were recently presented to Ukraine’s Minister of Health, Dr. Ulana Suprun, by U.S. Army Europe’s Commanding General, Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, on Aug. 27th.

For some Ukrainian Soldiers this was their first time driving any motored vehicle. Many Ukrainians use public transportation or bicycles rather than cars to get from place to place.

1st Lt. Ilchenko Ieugen, Commander of an engineer sapper platoon in the Ukrainian military, was instructed on how to drive new FLA even though he has never been licensed to drive a civilian car.

“The automatic transmission and sensitive steering wheel made it easy for me to use the [FLA],” said Ieugen through a translator. “It was difficult for me to gauge how big the [FLA] is with the turning and parking, but with more practice I will get better.”

Working with multi-national partners is not new for “Victory Medics” like Spc. Vlady Calice, medic with 557th ASMC, who has worked with Israeli Soldiers during exercise Juniper Cobra 2016 earlier this year in Israel. One thing he notices during these engagements is how receptive other countries in sharing medical knowledge.

“The Ukrainians have a very strong desire to learn,” said Calice. “They want to know everything we can possibly teach them. It’s cool to have students who are so motivated.”

Following this FLA familiarization the “Victory Medic” team will go over a familiarization of medical equipment sets with the Ukrainian Soldiers, equipment that is needed for a ground ambulance.
