PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Two Peabody Caregiver of the Year Award winners—both from Navy Medicine East (NME) medical treatment facilities—were honored during the Naval Center for Combat and Operational Stress Control (COSC) symposium Aug. 25.

Tracy Hejmanowski, Naval Hospital (NH) Jacksonville’s Deployment Health Center clinical psychologist and Lt. Cmdr. Christopher Stetler, Naval Hospital Rota, Spain’s Behavioral Health department head, received the award.

The Peabody Caregiver of the Year Award recognizes healthcare providers who raise the bar with compassion, concern and mental health care skills when it comes to caring for patients.

“These awards underscore the remarkable medical experts we have across the region keeping our Navy and Marine Corps family healthy, ready and on the job," said Rear Adm. Kenneth Iverson, NME commander.

Hejmanowski positively impacted patients with chronic deployment related conditions through numerous unique treatments, from dive training with a posttraumatic stress disorder group to tele-psychology.

“I am thankful to have been in your company today, to know each of you is committed to incorporating theory and treatment while remaining mindful and focused on the art of connection and engagement,” said Hejmanowski. “For those patients who may have witnessed humanity at its worst, it is the providers who bear the task of offering our best humanity.

Going beyond his department, Stetler forged a European alliance, bringing together Naples, Rota and Sigonella, Spain to enhance mental health care for the Navy and Marine Corps family across the region.

“It is an incredible honor to be selected for the Peabody award,” said Stetler. “It is also very humbling knowing the quality of my colleagues throughout Navy medicine. With the newly ported destroyers in Rota with aggressive operational schedules, it has been incredibly important to provide expeditious treatment and disposition, while working with the command triad and medical, to best serve the patients.”

The Peabody Award is named for Dr. Francis W. Peabody, a renowned Harvard Medical School graduate and professor best known for his "The Care of the Patient" lecture to Harvard students in 1925.

The 2016 Naval Center COSC symposium, held at Naval Medical Center San Diego, focused on expanding and advancing the quality and delivery of mental health care through the latest research and technology for combat and operational stress injuries. Symposium topics ranged from post-traumatic stress disorder to moral injuries, and concluded with the presentation of the Peabody Caregiver of the Year awards.

NME oversees the delivery of medical, dental and other health care services to approximately 1 million patients across almost 100 facilities in six countries: U.S. (East and Gulf Coasts), Spain, Italy, Greece, Cuba and Bahrain. Additionally, its public health activities extend globally. For more information, visit: www.med.navy.mil/sites/nme, www.twitter.com/NavMedEast and https://www.facebook.com/NavMedEast.
