Approximately 15 wrestlers with the All-Marine Wrestling Team practiced with the McGavock High School Wrestling Team in Nashville, Tenn. during Marine Week Nashville, Sept. 7, 2016.

After practicing with the students, the Marines answered questions about wrestling and discussed the All-Marine Sports Program and the opportunities available to athletes in the Corps. More than 700 Marines are participating in Marine Week Nashville to give members of the community the opportunity to interact with individual Marines and celebrate community, country, and Corps.

“I love doing school visits like this one,” said 1st Lt. Michael Brant, Officer in Charge, All-Marine Wrestling Team, MCB Camp Lejeune. “They are a great opportunity for us to engage with other athletes that also love the sport, and promote serving as a Marine and the opportunities available to athletes in the Corps. Most students are surprised to find out that they can continue competing after high school through the All-Marine Sports Program while serving their country. Many of the students even reconsider their plans for after high school when they find that out.”

For Charlee Paddock, a Junior and Wrestler at McGavock High School, learning about the All-Marine Sports Program opened up her eyes to the different ways she could serve her country.

“I’ve wanted to join the Marine Corps for a long time now,” said Paddock. “I am not sure what job I want to pursue as a Marine, but if I could have a job that challenges me physically, and I have an opportunity to join the All-Marine Wrestling Team, that would be my dream.”

During the practice, the Marines ran through some of the exercises and drills they use to prepare them for their competitions.

“It’s a good opportunity for our students to be exposed to wrestlers that compete at a higher level than them, because it will give them a goal to strive for,” said Paul Douglas, Head Wrestling Coach, McGavock High School. “I think it is also beneficial to my wrestlers to train with the Marines because it gives them a greater appreciation for those that defense our country. I have never seen the students enjoy practice this much, and look forward to using some of the things I’ve witnessed in this practice with them in the future.”

During and after the practice, the Marines took a few moments to answer questions and speak to students interested in joining the Marine Corps and becoming an All-Marine athlete.

“I recommend joining the Marine Corps and any All-Marine sports team to any high school or college athlete interested in competing and bettering themselves athletically,” said Brant. “Joining an All-Marine team opens doors to compete in several national and international championships, and train alongside some of the best athletes in the sport. Some of the members of our team were even screened to compete in the Olympics. The opportunities available to All-Marine athletes are unmatched.”

Soccer, golf, bowling, basketball, hockey, and several other sports have All-Marine and All-Service teams as well. For a complete listing, visit www.armedforcessports.defense.gov.
