MISAWA, Japan (NNS) – Sailors stationed at Misawa Airbase gathered today for the Sep. 11, 2001 remembrance ceremony.
This is the 15th anniversary of the attack and the ceremony is held in order to never forget the 2,977 people who lost their lives that day.
The ceremony is planned by the Chief Petty Officer Selects each year in Misawa and is a chance for them to display organizational skills and also their patriotism.
“This is a great opportunity for the chief petty officer selects,” said Chief Information Systems Technician (Select) Thomas Zacher. “We are both humbled and honored to plan this ceremony and in remembrance of those that we lost that day.”
The ceremony closed with a wreath hanging by Chief Logistics Specialist (Select) Julian Dulay, attached to Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department at Misawa Airbase.
The nearly 3,000 people killed Sept. 11, 2001 marked the single largest loss of life from a foreign attack on American soil. That same day, the United States declared "War on Terror", and citizens patriotically volunteered for military service. After 15 years, men and women all over America still join the armed forces as a result of 9/11.
