    II Marine Expeditionary Force

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Marine officers from Marine Corps Recruiting Command held a Marine Corps Leadership Seminar at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tenn., Sept. 8, 2016.

The seminar was one of the many events that will take place as part of Marine Week Nashville, Sept 7-11.

The course is designed to positively influence future leaders, both military and civilian, through the same values and characteristics instilled in Marines.

“We had a great opportunity to share the Marine Corps leadership approach,” said Capt. Jameson Norton, an instructor with MCLS. “We talked about different foundational principles that make Marine Corps leadership great, which are a lot of times consistent across industries. We want to be able to help them apply those principles in a way that impacts the community.”

Students, faculty and professors had the chance to participate in tactical decision games requiring them to make quick assessments under pressure, an often integral quality of being a Marine leader.

“I wasn’t expecting what I came into, but I like getting out of my comfort zone. It benefits all of us,” said Sarah Davis, an agricultural science major at Austin Peay.

“Some of the challenges we see in the Marine Corps are relative to what we see in the life of a college student,” said Lt. Gen. Ronald L. Bailey, Deputy Commandant of Deputy Commandant Plans, Polices, and Operations, and alumnus of Austin Peay. “All those who took part in the Marine Corps Leadership [Seminar] have the opportunity to share experience and expertise. It’s not only good for the Marine Corps; it’s also good for the institutions.”

The Marine Corps Leadership Seminar is visiting several universities in the greater Nashville area, coinciding with Marine Week Nashville. The Seminar travels to different colleges across the nation, and much like Marine Week, helps augment an understanding of the Corps and fosters exposure to the service.

“We’re here to provide a road map,” said Bailey. “These leadership traits can be used in the Marine Corps and used in the civilian community. Take those and develop your own philosophy and style and move forward."

Both Bailey and Norton are from the Nashville area, making the Seminar and Marine Week a little more special.

“It’s really special to do what I love, which is to share leadership principles I learned from the Marine Corps with the community,” said Norton. “Both being in Nashville and being a Marine are two foundational parts of who I am.”

“I think it’s absolutely outstanding. The approach Marine Week is taking focuses on community, the Corps and the country, which is what the Marine Corps is all about,” said Bailey. “There’s nothing like going home and seeing America’s future leaders.”

More than 800 Marines are participating in Marine Week Nashville to give the citizens of the greater Nashville area the opportunity to learn Corps’ capabilities while celebrating Marine traditions and history.
