CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait β€” Soldiers assigned to the 17th Sustainment Brigade and the 10th Combat Support Hospital hosted a walking blood donation screening and bone marrow registration here August 26, 2016.
Sgt. Jordan Abubakr, a health care specialist assigned to the 17th SB, 1st Sustainment Command (Theater), said the vials of blood they collected are analyzed and kept on record in case of emergency.
β€œIn the event blood is needed, an announcement will be made and donors will be directed to the troop medical center to donate the full units of blood,” said Abubakr.
The bone marrow registration is far simpler, said Sgt. 1st Class Doris Gomez, the noncommissioned officer in charge of the laboratory assigned to the 10th CSH.
To register, the donor simply swabs the inside of their cheek with a cotton swab. The sample is then shipped to an off-site facility where it is analyzed and added to a national database. If a match is made, the requesting medical facility will typically pay for the donor to fly to where the marrow is needed.
The process of donating marrow is done in two ways. Doctors can either extract it with a needle from the hip bone or harvest it from a blood plasma draw.
The bone marrow registration was open to all Soldiers, while the blood screening was available only to Soldiers that had more than 120 days left in their deployment. Over 40 Soldiers participated in one of the two programs.
