MCGHEE TYSON AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Tenn. – About two dozen kids in summer camp with the University of Tennessee Junior Leadership Institute visited the I.G. Brown Training and Education Center this summer to learn more about military service.

Master Sgt. Bill Conner and Tammie Seltzer with TEC’s Professional Continuing Education office met the kids at the University of Tennessee for breakfast.

The kids traveled to the TEC’s campus afterward to meet with Airmen.

“We talked about what it means to be in the military and about setting goals,” said Conner, who also gave the kids a tour of the TEC TV broadcast studio.

Carol S. Cruze, program director for UT’s professional development and Kids University, said that their summer program “strives to teach value in community service and involvement as it explores and connects kids with the community.”

“We wanted them to see what attributes made service members leaders in both the community and our country,” said Cruze.

“I feel the students learned a little bit of what it would be like to work on an air base and how the people on the base served our country in many different ways,” said Cruze. “They learned from Master Sergeant Conner there are so many different types of careers available with the Air National Guard, and that it’s not just flying airplanes.”
