(TAPA TRAINING AREA, Estonia) - Soldiers from Company A, 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division joined forces with the Estonian Army for a Combined Arms Live Fire Exercise at Tapa Training Area, Estonia August 26.

Soldiers from 3rd Bn., 69th Arm. Rgmt. are currently in Estonia as a part of Operation Atlantic Resolve, a demonstration of continued U.S. commitment to collective security through a series of actions designed to reassure NATO allies and partners of America's dedication to enduring peace and stability in the region.

Capt. Solomon Metcalf, the commander for Co. A, 3rd Bn., 69th Arm. Rgmt., said the CALFEX facilitates interoperability by forcing the U.S. and Estonian forces to communicate across the different warfighting functions.

“We controlled Estonian mortars with a joint U.S. and Estonian fire control center,” said Metcalf. “Our exercise of the Estonian mortars was the only way to test in a live-fire setting our ability to do this in a real world setting.”

The fire control center helped support U.S maneuver forces with Estonian indirect fires.

“This is the hallmark of interoperability; when we can use live ammunition in a combined arms setting across a large open area,” said Metcalf. “Putting those systems to the test and actually exercising them in a real live-fire setting validates our ability to work together with the Estonians.”

The training highlighted the increased strength of working in concert with our NATO allies.

“From this training, I want my Soldiers to take away that we are better collectively than we are singularly,” said Metcalf. “We become stronger anytime we fight together with an ally or partner and I hope the CALFEX demonstrated that working together with the Estonians makes us more effective, more lethal and more ready for any operations we may be asked to conduct.”

Metcalf said the Soldiers enjoyed training alongside the Estonians during the CALFEX while validating their ability to simultaneously mass effects on an enemy.

“The Soldiers did good,” said Metcalf. “Each element demonstrated their individual lethality at the platoon and section level, and collectively we were able to demonstrate, test, and validate our company here in Estonia.”
