Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni residents and Japanese locals gathered at Penny Lake for free food, fun and live music during the Summer Music Festival hosted by Marine Corps Community Services at MCAS Iwakuni, Japan, Aug. 27, 2016.

The Summer Music Festival is put together for service members and residents to enjoy the end of summer with a big celebration.

“This is the Summer Music Festival that we do yearly in August,” said Kristina King, a special event coordinator with MCCS. “This is something for our community to enjoy, have fun and listen to the beautiful music.”

The festival’s headlining band was the Scooter Brown Band. Based out of Houston, Texas, the Scooter Brown Band is known for their country and southern rock music, and for their work with veteran support organizations such as Base Camp 40 – Warriors in the Wild, Lone Survivor Foundation and the Chris Kyle Foundation.

“This means the world to me,” said Scott Brown, lead singer of the Scooter Brown Band, also a former Marine and combat veteran. “When I started playing music, one of my dreams was always to come back and play for other Marines, but also for all other service members on all the different bases.”

During the event, service members, families and Japanese locals came together to enjoy the evening filled with activities for all ages.

“We had local bands and the Scooter Brown Band from the U.S.,” said King. “We also had free food and drinks, beer, bounce houses for kids and snow cones.”

Marines from the station volunteered to help staff the event and run the different areas.

“I came just to help out as much as I could,” said Lance Cpl. Edwin Jackson, an avionics Marine with Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 12. “I love volunteering and seeing people happy. I love it. It’s fun.”

A fireworks display was shown at the end of the festival. Last year, the festival was brought indoors due to the rainy weather which meant this year’s fireworks was a sight for sore eyes.

“Last year we weren’t able to do fireworks at all,” said Cam Mangels, a special event coordinator with MCCS. “So it was a great night for everyone.”
