Local Sailors from Navy Operational Support Center (NOSC) Des Moines partnered with Greater Des Moines (GDM) Habitat for Humanity “Rock the Block” to help residents of Mitchellville, Iowa on August 18 as part of Des Moines Navy Week.

“Rock the Block” provides a path for homeowners, organizations and volunteers to come together to assist low-income families with needed repairs, maintenance, weatherization, safety, accessibility and beautification of homes.

Site Manager for GDM, Jake Ross, directed and supervised twelve NOSC Sailors that replaced windows, painted and performed light construction of homes in the Mitchellville area.

“We have not been able to come back out here since April so we haven’t been able to finish this project,” said Ross. “To have these Sailors willing to come out here to Mitchellville and serve one of our outlying communities is even better.”

“All of this energy goes towards helping families and our goal is to have 170 projects this year which means more families are affected in a positive way,” he said.

Homeowner Margaret Van Sickle has lived for more than 15 years in her home that was constructed in 1904.

“When I applied for this program, I didn’t know if I would get picked,” said Van Sickle. “I cried when I heard the news that I was going to be receiving new windows and now that I have Sailors in my house replacing it, I don’t know what to say but thank you.”

Commanding Officer of NOSC Des Moines, Tim Campbell, helped lead the way with his Sailors.

“Des Moines' Sailors, active and reserve, have had a great time volunteering at multiple events throughout the week,” said Campbell. “This opportunity meant a lot to Iowa Sailors and we had plenty of volunteers that specifically wanted to do this.”

“When our Sailors look back at their service in the Navy I know they will cherish this specific week,” he said. “All 150 active and reserve Sailors of Iowa's Navy Operational Support Center were ecstatic when we learned months ago that Des Moines, IA was selected as one of the Navy Week cities for 2016.”

The Navy Week program is designed to raise awareness about the Navy in areas across the country that traditionally do not have a naval presence, and to bring America’s Navy closer to the people it protects through community relation projects, speaking engagements, STEM demonstrations and media interviews with flag hosts and local area Sailors.
