Marines with 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing suspended nearly all air field operations for a 24-hour period, enabling Marines to conduct a one-day “reset” aboard Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California, Aug. 9.
Over a series of months, the Marine Corps’ aviation community experienced several mishaps related to aviation and aviation ground operations. While the cause of each mishap differed, the mishaps revealed a potential to refine and improve current practices.
According to Maj. Gen. Mark Wise, 3rd MAW commanding general, the one-day reset gave 3rd MAW Marines the opportunity to develop plans and improve their section’s operational readiness.
“I just want everyone to focus on how they’re doing business and how they could be doing business better,” said Wise. “We get so focused on specific mission sets that we need to take a step backward and kind of see the whole playing field and understand what’s important.”
During the reset, Wise and Sgt. Maj. James Porterfield, sergeant major of 3rd MAW, visited and spoke to Marines in Marine Aircraft Groups 11, 13, 16 and 39 as well as Marine Air Control Group 38.
“The people [are] what makes this successful,” said Porterfield. “If you think that you can’t make a difference, I’m here to tell you that you can … your input is what makes us great as a Corps.”
All of the Marine Corps’ MAWs will schedule and conduct a one-day reset, suspending all airfield operations and taking the time to evaluate operational readiness.
“Everyone has got a different problem,” said Wise. “What I am looking for is a critical look at what are those things that I can do – that you can do – to make the way we do business better. It’s focusing on those things that make us better as units … material and people included.”
