The 631st Engineer Company, Virgin Islands National Guard, continued a construction project on St. Croix, Aug. 7 to Aug. 19.

The unit stationed on St. Thomas came back to complete work they had begun a month ago during the first half of their annual training in July. Fifteen unit members spent a productive week conducting various project in and around the Army Aviation Operation Facility - tiling the hallways, painting the upstairs rooms and offices, sanding, painting and varnishing doors, fixing the bathrooms and replacing the water pump, a last minute project.

The unit split into groups of two and three, and tackled the projects. While a group was outside dealing with a last minute project, two other groups were fixing toilets and changing out ceiling tiles.

“We changed the flooring in the male and female bathrooms, replaced the face boards in the generator house, and painted the upstairs lobby and offices until we ran out of paint,” said Spc. Denby Dumas, an electrician with the unit, who served as the project manager for the training period.

Less than half the number of members came over for this project, as opposed to the last one which sported 32 members. Those members had the opportunity to cross train on many jobs.

“The unit got a lot of cross-training done during this leg of the project, drivers tried their hands at plumbing and cutting tiles, plumbers painted a few offices, electricians did carpentry and painted,” he stated.

Even though they put a dent in the projects during the prior training, the renovations were still numerous. The teams still tackled them and got a lot done. Their only limitation was supplies being exhausted.

“It was a lot to do, but we finished everything that we started, providing we had all the supplies that we needed. We were supposed to paint the hangar floor as one of the final projects, but we ran out of supplies.”

Previous work at the hangar included removing tiles, stripping doorframes of old paint and rust, treating and priming surfaces and a lot of painting of the first floor offices.
