Senior members of the Virgin Islands National Guard attended a Senior Leadership Conference at the Joint Force Headquarters Aug. 13 through Aug. 14.
At the conference, Brig. Gen. Deborah Howell, VING adjutant general, addressed soldiers and airmen at the rank of E7 and above. During her address, Gen. Howell stated her vision for the VING to be “a consistently top performing force.”
As part of the two-day conference, panels were held to discuss logistics, equal opportunity, medical readiness, and safety. These panels were meant to restate and provide clarification on how the VING moves forward while adhering to Gen. Howell’s vision.
“It also is an opportunity to foster my relationship about issues, and to give clarification and guidance,” said Gen. Howell of the conference. “I hope we bring to the table any other requirements needed to meet the goals.”
During the conference, a dining in was held on the night of Aug.13 at Government House. The main purpose of the dining in, which was originally adopted from The British Officers’ mess, was to promote cordiality, camaraderie and esprit de corps. The British Officers’ mess became the U.S. Regimental Mess, as evidenced in “The Officers Manual,” written and published by Col. James A. Moss in 1929,
As one highlight of the conference, attendees upheld customs and courtesies during the dining in. Capt. Marcia Spencer, 104th Troop Command Detachment commander attended and spoke about the camaraderie shared.
“I enjoyed it,” said Capt. Spencer. “The highlight for me were the skits. Seeing junior officers imitating the seniors’ was a good way to lighten the mood and set the tone for the night.”
