CAMP DAVIS, N.C. – Three platoons of Marines with 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, conducted notional offensive and defensive security operations Aug. 9, 2016, as part of a training exercise designed to strengthen their offensive and defensive skills.
“Our main mission is to work on security missions, including screening missions, which is a critical competency in an LAR unit,” said 1st Lt. Daniel P. DeLand, 1st platoon commander.
The Marines went on patrols to clear surrounding areas and set up posts to observe the enemy. They also set up watch posts for day and night observation in order to locate another platoon before being discovered themselves.
“The main mission of this field operation is to conduct security operations and to find the other platoons before they find us,” said Lance Cpl. Thomas J. Vento, a gunner on a light armored vehicle.
The end result of this training exercise is for the Marines to learn how to properly set up security positions and maintain communication on their vehicles while performing their job.
The most important part of this exercise is for the Marines to become more familiar with these techniques, said Vento. The more they understand them, the smoother the platoon will run.
The Marines are gaining experience with cover and concealment on their bodies and vehicles, how to set up security posts and how to observe their enemy to be able to function as a well-trained LAR unit for future operations.
