FORT STEWART, Ga. - Soldiers with Bravo Company, 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division and Marines with 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division conducted hasty landing zone training at Fort Stewart, Georgia, August 9-16.

“[This] is a great chance for the Soldiers to work with other engineers from a different branch of the military,” said U.S. Army 1st Lt. Mehmet Bahadir, platoon leader with B Co., 9th BEB.

Hasty landing zone training assessed Soldiers’ and Marines’ ability to operate heavy construction equipment, such as hydraulic excavators and bulldozers, while working together to complete a combat mission scenario creating a landing zone for helicopters.

The scenario required service members to clear routes to three hasty landing zones by removing large trees, undergrowth and soil.

“Today, we are working with 9th BEB to push out a clear path to our first hasty landing zone,” said Marine Sgt. Christopher Preston, engineer equipment mechanic and maintenance management officer, with 2nd CEB. “We are clearing about a mile to our first identified point. Our ending objective will be a little more than three miles.”

Senior leadership assessed service members’ progression through training objectives daily.

“They will be evaluated on their performance as far as operating their equipment, how they communicate during the mission and ability to complete each objective,” said Preston.

The Soldiers and Marines agreed the training started off well and enjoyed training together and increasing joint force readiness.

“It looks as if these Marines and the Army have been working together for a long time. They are preforming great together,” Preston said.

“It has been great to have the opportunity to train with the Soldiers,” said Marine Lance Cpl. Jonathan Rose, an engineer equipment mechanic with 2nd CEB. “You never know when we will be down range together. It is nice to work with service members with different experiences.”

Although they came from different services, Soldiers found it easy to communicate and work alongside their Marine counterparts. For one, this was an exciting first in his military career.

“Working with the Marines has been a different experience, which is great,” said U.S. Army Spc. Marquis Walker, a combat engineer with B Co. “This is the first time I have worked with the Marines like this. It was [surprising] how easy it was for us to work as a team with people we don’t even know.”
