The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Sycamore received the Coast Guard Foundation Alaska Award at the Alaska Coast Guard Foundation Dinner in Anchorage, Alaska, Aug. 10, 2016. Cmdr. James Jarnac, Chief Warrant Officer Joshua Clegg, Chief Warrant Officer Jason Scott and Seaman Tyrell Miranda received the award on behalf of the Sycamore crew.
During the dinner, the crew was recognized by members of the Coast Guard Foundation, Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Paul F. Zukunft, Adm. Michael F. McAllister, commander, 17th Coast Guard District, and guest speaker Iditarod Musher Aliy Zirkle for their professional accomplishments throughout 2015.
In 2015, the crew of the Sycamore conducted several search and rescue cases including a rescue in which they led a multi-unit search for a downed aircraft. The crew of the Sycamore, along with crews from Coast Guard Cutter Mustang, Coast Guard Station Valdez, Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak and Air National Guard, searched through severe weather conditions and reduced visibility.
During Operation Arctic Shield 2015, the crew overcame harsh weather and logistical challenges as they transited through the Arctic during a 51-day patrol. During their patrol, they strengthened Arctic partnerships in the Yakutata, Hooper Bay and Point Hope villages, serviced aids to navigation beyond their normal area of responsibility and provided a Coast Guard presence in the Bering, Chukchi and Beaufort Seas.
In their homeport of Cordova, the crew has fully integrated into the community. Crewmembers coach little league teams, lead faith-based youth groups, participate in harbor cleanups and host the Haunted Sycamore at Halloween. The crew also participated and assisted with the Village of Eyak’s Sobriety Festival and the Cordova Ice Worm winter festival.
