Members of the Joint Force Headquarters, Virgin Islands Army National Guard attended a Hurricane Preparedness Brief held, Aug. 6.
Held on the VING JFHQ drill hall floor, representatives from the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority, VI Fire Service, the American Red Cross of the VI, VI Territorial Emergency Management Agency, and the VI Department of Health gave short presentations. The presentations stressed reasons why the community needed to be prepared for any major disaster, and the roll that the VING would play in response to those disasters. Events such as hurricanes, tsunamis, Zika virus outbreaks and fires were some of the topics presented. Instructions were also given as to how community members should specifically respond to each event.
Each organization had individual tables to provide information on their specific subject matter. VING members were also given the chance to question the presenters and express their specific concerns. The presentations proved to be vital to the National Guard members who live and work in the community.
“We are a small community that is very susceptible to our environment,” said Staff Sgt. Sheronette Mills. “Enforcing good practices and learning what to do in the event of a natural phenomenon can minimize the loss of life.”
The hurricane season, which began June 1 and ends Nov. 30, is currently ongoing, and the VI is always at risk of being affected by the season’s inclement weather.
