Military training instructors shape the Air Force one Airmen at a time, and for Grissom members there’s a chance to join that force shaping team.

Recruiters from the 433rd Training Squadron at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, visited Grissom July 9-10 to educate Airmen on opportunities to help lay the foundation of the Air Force’s future.

Master Sgt. Carlos Recoder and Tech. Sgt. Jesse Garcia, 433rd TRS military training instructors, visited the base to educate and recruit potential traditional reservists in an effort to retain qualified Airmen interested in joining the MTI corps.

“The best Airmen will be those with dedication for the job, and willing to make decisions on the spot and take pride in what you do,” Recoder said. “Being professional all the time is a requirement because after seven and a half weeks, the Airmen look up to you and want to be like you.”

Airmen qualified and accepted will be on a three-year tour as a traditional reservist after completing an approximately five-month-long technical school.

“Positions within the 433rd TRS include active guard Reserve positions in the rank tech. sergeant to senior master sergeant; traditional reservist positions in the rank tech. sergeant to chief master sergeant; and Air Reserve technician positions in the rank tech. sergeant to chief master sergeant,” Recoder said.

Although Recorder and Garcia are currently only recruiting for traditional reservists, they said the 433rd TRS is very flexible and that most Airmen living in the local area of Lackland AFB go on orders for one year and Airmen who live outside of the local area are usually on orders for six months.

Recorder and Garcia said it typically takes one year for Airmen to fully grasp every aspect of being an MTI.

“It typically takes one year for MTIs to fully grasp every aspect of the job,” Garcia said. “That’s where great qualities of being a strong MTI come into play. The more flights they have, the more experience they gain, the easier the job becomes.”

A former Marine, Recoder, who first joined the MTI corps as a reservist, has been fortunate enough to earn himself an active Guard Reserve position and has been an MTI for 11 years. Similarly, Garcia, who was a formal dental technician in the active-duty Air Force, has been an MTI for seven years.

In addition to meeting the basic job qualification, successful candidates, should be personable and genuinely care about the Airmen they train.

“A successful candidate for being an MTI is someone who cares, because at the end of the day, trainees are people first,” Garcia said. “People have a misconception that being an MTI is all about yelling but there’s so much more to it than that.”

“We’re looking for Airmen who are not scared of anything,” Recoder said. “In most jobs, it’s easy to get comfortable and get into a routine. Being an MTI is not a routine – nothing is routine at basic military training. It’s challenging at times and you’re dealing with supervising 50 individuals at any given time, but at the end of the day, we have a life-long effect on so many individuals.”
