ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, MD, UNITED STATES

    Story by Maj. Ryan Donald

    20th CBRNE Command

ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. – Col. Heidi Hoyle, commander, 71st Ordnance Group (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) spoke at the NDIA EOD symposium in Bethesda, Maryland, Aug. 3.

Hoyle discussed what it takes to execute the elimination of weapons of mass destruction mission successfully.

“WMD Elimination is both a combined arms mission and an interagency mission, no one organization has the capability or capacity to execute this mission set alone,” Hoyle told the symposium. “Planning to eliminate WMDs requires my forces to not only focus on the technical skill set but also the tactical skill set to ensure they have the competence and confidence to execute this critical mission in a complex environment.”

She added, other important considerations in the WMD elimination mission is the intelligence preparation of the operational environment, the flow of information up and down the chain and finally the logistical requirements.

This summer the 20th CBRNE Command will rehearse its WMD mission set by certifying as a Joint Task Force-Elimination. The JTF will consist of U.S. Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines. The command last certified as a JTF-E in 2009.

The Fort Carson-based 71st Ordnance Group’s (EOD) mission is to deploy and conduct EOD Operations in support of military and civilian authorities to defeat or mitigate the effects of conventional and unconventional (nuclear, biological, chemical, radiological and improvised) explosive ordnance in its assigned Area of Responsibility (AOR).

The 71st Ordnance Group is part of the Aberdeen Proving Ground-based 20th CBRNE Command. The 20th CBRNE Command is the Defense Department's only multifunctional formation that combats global chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive threats. The one-of-a-kind command trains with joint, interagency and allied partners around the world.
