JUNEAU, Alaska — A Coast Guard Station Juneau response boat crew and Juneau EMTs medevaced a 96-year-old man from the cruise ship Explorer of the Seas, Monday evening.
The boatcrew and EMTs transported the man to Coast Guard Station Juneau where he was transferred to awaiting EMS.
Coast Guard 17th District watchstanders received a report from the crew of the Explorer of the Seas that the man was suffering from symptoms of a heart attack. Watchstanders consulted with the duty flight surgeon and requested the launch of the response boat with EMTs aboard.
"A case like this highlights the training and proficiency of our boat crewmembers," said Petty Officer 3rd Class Richard Kuehnis, a crewmember on the response boat. "Shortly after we received the call, we were able to respond quickly and get the patient to a higher level of care."
Weather on scene was reported as 2-mph winds and calm seas.
