    3rd Combat Aviation Brigade

HUNTER ARMY AIRFIELD, Ga. – Soldiers from 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade gathered on Hunter Army Airfield for the Marne Air Slugfest softball tournament July 25-28 where units slugged it out on the diamond to see who would be this year’s heavy hitters.

The heat was a factor for the players but the real heat came from 3rd Squadron, 17th Calvary Regiment’s team who remained undefeated as they stepped on the field to face the reigning champions. 2nd Battalion, 3rd Aviation Regiment has etched their name into the Slugfest trophy for the past two years and stood ready to defend their tittle a third time.
Capt. Cody Murtle, maintenance platoon leader, Troop D, 3rd Squad, 17th Cav. Regt. described his team as scrappy but efficient.
“Historically 2nd Bn., 3rd Avn. Regt. is the team to beat in the slugfest tournament,” Murtle said. “At the end of the day we put guys where they needed to be and we got it done.”
Taking the lead early was 2nd Bn., 3rd Avn. Regt. with a one run lead but they extended it to five by the end of the fourth inning. It was not good enough as 3rd Squad., 17th Cav. Regt. started a two out rally that proved to be the difference earning them their first crown as winners of the Marne Air Slugfest with a final score of 15 to 14.
1st Sgt. Jose Serrano, 3rd Squad, 17th Cav. Regt. is retiring with over 20 years in the Army but wanted one thing before departing.
“I wanted this so much because this is my sixth year here. I wanted something to say I came out of here as a champion. We went undefeated the whole tournament,” Jose said. “I feel real good that they can come out and do something like this, the Soldiers need it. We need more families to come around so we can be a family and be a team before we have to deploy somewhere else. Spending time with the family is the number one thing for the Soldiers and that way you keep a healthy Soldier and a healthy Army.”
Sgt. Elias Serrano, 2nd Bn., 3rd Avn. Regt. spoke about how much he has enjoyed the last few days playing in the Slugfest.
“I love the comradery. Just getting together with other battalions and knowing who is out there that loves to play sports like we do,” Serrano said. “We were the defending champs and most of us will be here next year.”
