Sailor 2025: IWTC Virginia Beach Hosts IT Rating Review

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Leaders from the information systems technician (IT) rating wrapped up a ten-day review at Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) Virginia Beach, July 22.

The assessment gave subject matter experts (SMEs) from the IT community the opportunity to envision a more comprehensive and practical training schedule that supports the Chief of Naval Personnel’s goal to modernize the training process as part of the Sailor 2025 program.

“This was a great way to take a look at all the training for our rating from our occupational standards to our specialized training in 'C' School,” said Chief Information Systems Technician (SW/AW) Lacey Pipolo, an instructor for the Information Systems Security Manager and Network Security Vulnerability courses at IWTC Virginia Beach. “It allowed all of the SMEs in attendance to evaluate what training was redundant within the courses and the criticality of the learning objectives, as well as the frequency with which the tasks are performed.”

Sailor 2025 has a group of initiatives called ready, relevant learning, which is about getting the right training to the right Sailor at the right time. It aims to optimize the Navy’s training process to better align with the knowledge Sailors would actually need to perform the duties expected of them at their current pay grades.

“We're trying to transition from depending on formal schoolhouse training and integrate the training throughout a Sailor's career both afloat and ashore,” said Chief Information Systems Technician (SW) Shavon Cummings, the Consolidated Afloat Network Enterprise Services "C" School course supervisor at IWTC Virginia Beach. “The results of this working group will determine how training will be delivered, whether it be formal schooling; mobile trainer; or on the job training.”

One objective of ready, relevant learning is to break formal training into blocks of practical instruction which correspond with the Sailor’s current needs while identifying subjects which could be learned later in their careers.

"The Center for Information Warfare Training (CIWT), which teaches IT curriculum at locations throughout the U.S. and Japan, aims to be innovative and leverage all of our available processes, procedures, systems, technology and resources to create and maintain the most effective training solutions," said Master Chief Information Systems Technician (IDW/SW/AW) Demetrius Farrie, CIWT IT rating lead. "Bringing together the IT fleet and policy experts at this review was critical to capturing the work being done and moving ahead and delivering training for a dynamic rating that has an important role to play in today's digital and RF (radio frequency) environment."

Center for Information Warfare Training delivers trained information warfare professionals to the Navy and joint services, enabling optimal performance of information warfare across the full spectrum of military operations.
