WEST POINT – Civilian Careers was the topic of discussion during the Career Program 26 – Manpower and Force Management (CP26) Proponency Office roadshow at the United States Military Academy, July 18-19, at West Point, New York.

“I found the roadshow very informative especially if you are new to CP26 or working for the government in general,” said Samantha D'Cunha, a management analyst at the West Point Garrison. “I found out that some people are not aware of the classes they are able to take and I learned some new websites to research specific topics and places I can go to find certain classes pertaining to my career program.”

During the visit to West Point, the CP26 Proponency Office hosted two roadshows. One version was presented to the American Society of Military Comptrollers (ASMC) West Point Chapter and another presentation was given to the West Point community at large. More than 50 people attended the roadshows during the visit.

The roadshow focused on many topics related, not only to CP26 but Army civilian careers overall. Topics included reviewing the ACTEDS Plan, applying for competitive professional development opportunities and the Army’s talent management programs.

“As a newbie to the federal government more organizations should begin with roadshows like this. It was very informative and well presented,” said D'Cunha. “I was shocked to hear some people were not aware of the different classes that are provided here. I believe everyone should take the opportunity given to them in the government because you most likely do not receive the same treatment in the private sector.”

In addition to the road show, Beryl Hancock, Chief, Manpower Policy, Plans and Programs Division and Chief of the CP26 Proponency Office, also presented her Army Civilian Toolkit briefing that included tips and tricks that can be for searching for federal positions on USAJobs, looking for career broadening opportunities and how to develop an effective resume.

“I learned some new information by striking up a conversation with the CP26 team,” said D’Cunha. “I also believe the resume guide was also beneficial to everyone whether you are looking for a job or looking to help others in their search.”

“Speaking at such a storied institution is an honor,” said Hancock. “I am pleased that the CP26 Proponency Office was invited here to share our briefings. The purpose of these roadshows is strengthen cross communication between us and the field, so that we can better serve our manpower and force management community.”

West Point traces its origins to the Revolutionary War. General George Washington considered the location to be the most important strategic position in America. Initial construction began on West Point during the summer of 1775. The Army has occupied West Point since January 27, 1778. Today, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point has a cadet-student body of more than 4,000. The U.S. Army Garrison West Point provides services, programs and infrastructure to sustain a community of excellence at West Point.
