Soldiers with Iowa Army National Guard 1st Battalion 133rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd of the 34th Iowa Brigade Combat Team conducted weapons qualification and familiarization during the beginning of their annual training conducted at Fort Wainwright, Alaska.
The soldiers qualified with various weapon systems such as the M240 machine gun, the M79 hand grenade, the M500 shotgun and the M2 50 caliber machine gun.
For many soldiers, this was the first time to qualify with different weapons and for nearly all the Iowa soldiers, this was their first time in Alaska. “It's a unique experience. I have never been here before,” said Iowa Army National Guard Spc. Tanner J. Gunderson of Terril, Iowa, with Bravo Company 1st Battalion 133rd Infantry Regiment out of Iowa City, Iowa.
The Iowa soldiers are in Alaska to support a U.S. Army Pacific level exercise held in Alaska for the first time.
Iowa Army National Guard Pfc. Jessica D. Sanchez of Spirit Lake, Iowa, with Delta Company 1st Battalion 133rd Infantry out of Sioux City, Iowa said, “One of my biggest dreams was to go to Alaska and it is nice that my first annual training is here,” said Sanchez.
The training was part of Arctic Anvil 2016, which is scheduled to take place from July 23 to Aug. 3, with soldiers of the 133rd Infantry Regiment acting as enemy forces, civilians on the battlefield and role-player support to create a realistic and challenging scenario for the U.S. Army's 1st Striker Brigade Combat Team, and the 1st Battalion 52nd Aviation Regiment, both with U.S. Army Alaska.
