    B-29 Doc's First Flight

    MCCONNELL AFB, KS, UNITED STATES

    07.17.2016

Story by Airman 1st Class Joshua Crawley

    22nd Air Refueling Wing

A quartet of 3,500 horsepower engines scream to life, pushing their propellers into a blistering spin while smoke charges out the back. They belong to Doc, a B-29 Superfortress…one that hasn’t flown the skies in six decades. The restoration team looks on at the marvel they have toiled over for the last sixteen years; for them, the moment they’ve worked so hard for is finally at hand.

Anthony Mazzolini, Project Lead/US AF Veteran
“It’s exciting, it’s kind of hard to even say. You know, I’ve been living on a high for the last week or two, or the last so many days and weeks….I’m sure that once it’s first flight has been completed, I’ll be able to get a good night’s rest…(laughs) somehow!”

The anticipation pays off as the B-29 thunders into the skies from McConnell Air Force Base, soaring over the very factories where it was made so long ago.

    Charlie Tilghman, Pilot
“It just flies like a good B-29, flies like a brand new one. It’s a great airplane, what more could a pilot ask for?”

    Anthony Mazzolini
“Being part of the Air Force, I’m honored that it was restored back in to flying condition to keep the memories alive, and this is why we’ve restored history: for the future.”

As the tires leave their mark once again on an air force runway, a link to the past is reconnected, and the sheltering wings of all those who defended this nation from above are remembered.

A1C Josh Crawley, McConnell Air Force Base, Kansas.
