On a hot, summer day, members of the 2nd Battalion, 345th Regiment, 157th Infantry Brigade, welcomed a new command team with incoming commander, Lt. Col. Augusto Villalaz, and incoming Command Sgt. Maj. Sammie L. McCall during a change of command and change of responsibility ceremony here at Darby Field, July 17.

The 345th Regiment, family and friends gathered to give goodbyes to outgoing commander, Lt. Col. Christopher W. Warner, and Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Mew, as they relinquished their command and responsibility, respectively.

As members of the unit looked on, Warner proffered the battalion guidon to Col. Matthew H. Fath, 345th Battalion outgoing commander, who in turn passed it to Villalaz signifying an unbroken chain of command. The act of passing the colors traces back for centuries.

Villalaz joined the Army in 1998, and has served as a member of the U.S. Army’s active component, Army National Guard and the Army Reserve. As a direct commissioned infantry officer, he deployed three times in support of Operation Noble Eagle and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

“I am very proud and humbled to be able to take over command of the 345th,” said Villalaz. “[Lt. Col Christopher W. Warner] has left me with a great unit that is ready to mobilize.”

Warner wanted to ensure Villalaz was well informed of what the position would consist of and was eager to fill him in on the responsibilities.

“When I found out Villalaz would be taking my place as commander, we began contact early on so that he would be fully aware of what we are doing,” said Warner.

As the ceremony concluded, Villalaz expressed to Warner and his new Soldiers his gratitude for the opportunity to lead well-trained Soldiers in a time critical to the nation’s defense.
