Hidden gem at New River: Year round hockey rink

MARINE CORPS AIR STATION NEW RIVER, NC, UNITED STATES

Tucked away on Marine Corps Air Station New River is an inline hockey rink, where people can enjoy inline skating or play inline hockey games.

Located on Agan Street, the rink is open year-round for all authorized MCCS patrons for skating or hockey.

The rink was opened in 2001 and is a regulation size inline hockey rink. It features full boards, hockey glass all the way around as well as player benches, score booth and a scoreboard.

"The rink is open for patrons to use on their own during daylight hours," said Chris Miller, MCCS Lejeune- New River Sports Coordinator. "We have pickup hockey games on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at approximately 6 p.m. as well as Sundays starting at 11 a.m."

Patrons who use the facility are required to wear safety equipment at all times on the rink.

"Because the rink is an open facility and does not have constant staff supervision, patrons should wear proper personal protective equipment and act within their abilities when at the hockey rink," said Miller. "Required PPE for skating is helmet, knee pads and elbow pads. Required PPE for inline hockey is a helmet with at least a ½ shield, elbow pads, knee and shin guards, hockey gloves and a mouth piece."

Patrons can rent gear through MCCS and also participate on a competitive level in an adult league which runs in the spring and fall.

"Adult league registrations are generally in February and September," said Miller. "Specific dates can be found on the MCCS website."

MCCS sponsors intramural sports in order to provide Marines and sailors an opportunity to stay active and enjoy sports they may have played before joining the military.

"Sports are a great way for our active duty service members as well as families to get out and have fun while exercising and getting to know new people," said Miller.
