STRENGTHENING PARTNERSHIPS
Air Force Academy cadets experience expeditionary life during Operation Air Force
by Master Sgt. Andrew Biscoe
SOUTHWEST ASIA – They made their way across the world as part of what today’s Air Force expects from its Airmen -- but these young men and women aren’t even quite signed up yet.
Twenty-two Air Force Academy cadets arrived at the Rock June 21. While here, they lived and breathed the expeditionary Air Force life for three weeks.
They also visited other Southwest Asia military bases, and saw first-hand how deployed men and women deliver decisive airpower.
“It’s just incredible to see the Air Force specialty codes working together, and getting to see Air Force people in their element,” said Cadet Second Class Karl Sapper.
“They’re getting a strategic look in a joint environment,” said their trainer, Tech. Sgt. Jason Austin. “They’ve gained huge amounts of perspective … not just on the career fields they’re considering, but with career fields that could affect theirs.”
Austin, an academy military trainer who’s spent four years at the Air Force’s Colorado landmark, prepared their overseas trip nearly a year in advance.
“This was the first time for me with this,” Austin said. “I couldn’t wait to take them out here.”
Sapper was particularly appreciative to the Airmen of the 386th Air Expeditionary Wing for taking time to show the cadets the many facets of the expeditionary mission.
“The hospitality shown by the members of the wing at the Rock, we’re ever appreciative for it,” he said. “And for this opportunity we’ve been granted. We’ve gotten to see what Airmen do on a daily basis.”
