MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. - The Marine Corps is an elite organization that relies heavily on strong communication between its members to accomplish a wide range of operations. That communication is key in order to coordinate logistics support, movements of battle, and even intelligence gathering. Every operation or training exercise strongly depends on the ability to communicate with internal and external elements to accomplish a mission.
Marines with Communications Company, Headquarters Regiment, 1st Marine Logistics Group, provide these services which allow units to communicate with other elements within the Marine air ground task force; the 3rd Marine Air Craft Wing, 1st Marine Division, and I Marine Expeditionary Force. They provide everything from access to the internet and the news as well as phone calls both internally to the exercise and externally with phones within the Department of Defense.
During the recent exercise, Command Post Exercise 3 (CPX 3), the communications Marines were hard at work providing services to the commanding general and his staff as well as the entire MEF.
“At CPX 3, our role was to establish those services for the general and his staff and to provide external services to our adjacent and subordinate commands,” said 1st Lt. Derek Donovan, the operations officer for Communications Co., Headquarters Regiment, 1st MLG. “We gave them the capability to get on google, email, and have logistics and transportation support requests.”
Exercises like this are vital for the individual Marine as well as the entire MEF to ensure they maintain a state of readiness.
“Training is important in order for us to maintain our training and readiness standards so our Marines can progress and go on to support other units,” Said Donovan. “It is also important for the MEF as a whole so that we can prove that we can be in a field environment and communicate with each other through email, telephone, and video conferencing; and be able to share information across the MEF in support of operations.”
The Communications Co. Marines will continue supporting units within 1st MLG to help maintain those standards as they work toward a large-scale exercise in August called Marine Expeditionary Force exercise, or MEFEX.
“This is one of the largest exercises that we do all year,” Donovan said. “MEFEX is one of the only times we actually come together as a MAGTF and do a large-scale exercise together, which is really awesome. It’s a good exercise and I think the Marines as well as the MEF as a whole get a lot out of it.”
During this exercise, their main role will be to provide command and control services to the 1st MLG commanding general and his staff as well as provide services to the rest of the elements of the MAGTF so they are able to effectively communicate.
