JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM, Hawaii - Rim of the Pacific participants attended a Task Force Energy and Environment training forum held at the Ford Island Conference Center, July 6.

The purpose of the training was to promote awareness on the need to evolve warfighting techniques, energy conservation, shipboard efficiency and to develop alternative fuels.

The commander of Task Force Energy and Environment and Navy Region Hawaii, Rear Adm. John Fuller, spoke with international senior leadership about the benefits of TFEE and the importance of achieving greater energy efficiency.

"We are a new generation of warfighters," said Fuller. "Successful warfighters embrace the newest innovations and the latest technologies and techniques. Those who evolve survive; those who fail to evolve fail to thrive."

As a part of this year's RIMPAC, participating countries will incorporate the use of 11.2 million gallons of a 10 percent alternative fuel blend during the exercise. The fuel is made of a drop-in alternative, meaning no modifications to engines or operational procedures are required. The use of alternative fuel in the supply chain increases operational readiness and flexibility by allowing forces to obtain fuel from more natural materials worldwide.

The fuel is part of the Navy's Great Green Fleet demonstration during RIMPAC, which allows the Navy to demonstrate, test, and evaluate the functionality of advanced biofuels in a simulated operational setting. The purpose of the GGF is to make Sailors and Marines better warfighters by being able to travel farther, stay longer and deliver more firepower.

The Navy Energy Coordination Office was established to support TFEE and coordinate the Navy's overall energy strategy. They are responsible for the Navy's energy efficiency, conservation, and alternative energy investments for tactical and shore forces.

Lt. Cmdr. Robert Franklin III, deputy chief of staff for Commander, Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific, said training opportunities like TFEE provide a unique forum to share ideas, collaborate and learn from one another.

"We are thrilled for the opportunity to engage with seven of our partner nations and build mutual understanding and respect," said Franklin. "GGF offers the RIMPAC team, with participants from all type commanders, a chance to demonstrate the depth and breadth of Navy energy programs and how it works to make us better warfighters."

U.S. Vice Adm. Nora Tyson, commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet and RIMPAC combined task force commander, concluded the symposium by expressing her gratitude to both U.S. and international forces in attendance.

"This is a big part of RIMPAC," said Tyson. "These meetings and discussions are what help us become more efficient and effective. .By aligning our efforts and ideas with other nations we build lasting, trusting relationships, and in doing so, we have laid the foundation for global prosperity."

Twenty-six nations, 49 ships, six submarines, about 200 aircraft, and 25,000 personnel are participating in RIMPAC from June 29 to Aug. 4 in and around the Hawaiian Islands and Southern California. The world's largest international maritime exercise, RIMPAC provides a unique training opportunity while fostering and sustaining cooperative relationships between participants critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and security on the world's oceans. RIMPAC 2016 is the 25th exercise in the series that began in 1971.
