IKLA, ESTONIA – Sunny skies, warm temperatures, and clear roads make for a great road trip. July 1, 2016, U.S. Army soldiers from the 515th Transportation Company, 39th Transportation Battalion, 16th Sustainment Brigade, 21st Theatre Sustainment Command based in Latvia took part in what has become a regular trip for them, traveling cross-border to resupply members of their own unit in Estonia.

Spc. Obed Perez, a Motor Transport Operator and native of Waynesville, MO, drove for the Latvia team. He said, “I feel honored to be a critical part in the Baltic exercises with NATO and its allies.”

Spc. Travontis Bell, a Motor Transport Operator, and native of Macon, GA, was Perez’ truck commander. As truck commander Bell had a variety of responsibilities, including navigator. Today he would need to navigate across national borders to get his vehicle to the right linkup point in Estonia.

Coming from Estonia, Spc. Noah Lloyd, a Motor Transport Operator and native of Roanoke, VA, drove his own Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck to the linkup point.

After both teams arrived they went through the careful process of exchanging a full fuel trailer for an empty one.

When complete, both parties conducted a PMCS, to make sure everything was ready to go for the long trip back. Even in simple operations it’s attention to the basics, like PMCS, that helps ensure success. After some friendly conversation they finished their paperwork and began the trip back for a well-deserved rest.

Units participating in Atlantic Resolve are spread from Estonia in the north all the way to Bulgaria in the south, more than 1,000 miles. Cross border supply operations like this are key to the success of these units as the distances between them can be great. Atlantic Resolve is being conducted in Eastern Europe to demonstrate U.S. commitment to the collective security of NATO and dedication to enduring peace and stability in the region.

Well planned and well executed logistical operations are required at the highest and lowest levels to keep every soldier fed and every vehicle rolling.

The fuel resupply mission was a success. “It went great because of great soldiers,” Spc. Perez said as he took off his helmet. “And great teamwork.”
