CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait – On a surprise trip from Iraq, 19-year-old Spc. Anthony W. Avant, Jr. visited his mother, Master Sgt. Veronica L. Avant, the weekend before Father's Day – both are residents of El Monte, Calif., but call Chicago home.
Instead of taking a four day pass to the much sought after R&R spot in Qatar, Anthony took his pass to see his mom in the deserts of Kuwait. "I haven't seen my son in over eight months, so this is wonderful," she said.
The son deployed for the first time in January – shortly after getting married. His unit, the 137th Quarter Master Co., deployed in support of the 87th CSSB, 3rd Infantry Division in Mosul.
His mother began serving her second deployment here in April with the 311th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) as the food services manager for all of Kuwait.
"We spent our last night together dining at 'Applebees Bar and Grill' in the Zone 1 dining facility followed by karaoke and salsa dancing at the recreational facility here," she said.
"My mom made sure my belly was full before moving north," said Avant.
The Avant family proudly serves when called to duty to build a better future for others and to preserve America's way of life, said Master Sgt. Avant.
This Saturday, the Army celebrates its 233rd birthday as well as marking its 35th anniversary as an all-volunteer force.
Anthony's wife, Pvt. Latoni V. Avant, serves as an active duty supply specialist and expects to deploy with her unit out of Fort Carson, Co. next year.
Anthony, who is currently a reservist, plans on going active duty after this deployment so he and his wife can serve together once she returns from her unit's upcoming rotation.
