The 60th Mission Support Group welcomed its new commander, Col. Lance Clark, during a change-of-command ceremony June 24 at Travis Air Force Base, California.

The change of command is an official, formal and brief ceremony that is the military’s way of bestowing command responsibility of a unit to one officer. The ceremony is traditionally performed in front of members of the unit allowing each person to observe the placing of authority and responsibility on the new commander.

Col. Joel Jackson, 60th Air Mobility Wing commander, presided over the ceremony which included a formation of the 60th MSG and a parade from members of the group representing the wide range of career fields in the 60th MSG.

After thanking the guests, Jackson proceeded to run down a list of mission accomplishments and awards the 60th MSG achieved during Col. George “Dutch” Dietrich III’s command, including four awards at the Air Force level, 46 awards at the Air Mobility Command level and 26 awards at the wing level. His group has also won the AMC’s Logistics Readiness Squadron Daedalian Award, the Force Support Squadron Hennessy Award and had an Airman recognized as one of 12 Outstanding Air Force Airmen of the Year.

As the commander of the 60th MSG, Dietrich directed 1,900 Airmen in six squadrons responsible for civil engineering, communications, contracting, logistics, base security and services that support a base community of 135,000 personnel. He controlled an annual budget of more than $100 million and resources exceeding $5 billion.

“Those of who know Dutch are not surprised by his group’s accomplishments,” said Jackson. “But what some of you may not know, Dutch is the number one of seven MSG commanders in 18th Air Force for the second year in a row and it’s that type of leadership that has taken his group to new heights. The mission support group has thrived under your command and we thank you for your leadership and guidance while accomplishing the mission, developing Airmen and fostering a culture of excellence.”

Jackson then presented Dietrich the Legion of Merit for his accomplishments while assigned as the 60th MSG commander.

“It’s been an amazing two years,” said Dietrich. “To the men and women of the 60th Mission Support Group, I could not be more proud of you or proud of what we’ve accomplished in the last two years.”

He thanked his wife for her support during their time at Travis as well as the squadrons he led and worked with as well as Clark to the group.

“Lance, I’m incredibly envious of you and Julie,” said Dietrich. “You’re about to embark on the two most amazing years of your Air Force career. You have amazing leaders and Airmen to work for and with and an amazing community providing support.”

Clark was the director of command instruction and leadership studies at the U.S. Army War College, Pennsylvania, before taking of command of the 60th MSG. His previous assignments include being the 19th Civil Engineer Squadron commander, Little Rock AFB, Arkansas, and the 36th Civil Engineer Squadron readiness and emergency management flight commander, 36th Air Base Wing, Guam.

“We are incredibly excited to be here,” said Clark. “Since we came into the Air Force and I was a military brat, I’ve heard lots about Travis (AFB), primarily of the reputation that Travis (AFB) has always boasted and to be a part of it is incredibly exciting.”
