FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz., June 20, 2016 – Right now, more than 400 U.S. Army Reserve Soldiers are navigating triple-digit temperatures during the two-week Quartermaster Liquid Logistics Exercise (QLLEX), Fort Huachuca, Arizona. QLLEX is an annual U.S. Army Reserve logistics training event that focuses on the technical training of Quartermaster Soldiers for the storage, production and on-time distribution of water and petroleum in bulk amounts equivalent to what they would work with in a combat environment.

“My unit is providing command and control for various units involved, as well as assisting with shipping fuel to other units in the area of operations,” said Maj. Anthony Tomlin, operations officer, 316th Quartermaster Battalion. “The units here have fuel trucks that are capable of hauling more than 19,000 gallons of fuel per day.”

A wide range of units are attending QLLEX alongside the fuel units, and they provide showers, laundry services, food and clean drinking water for the Soldiers involved, said Tomlin.

The Shower/Laundry and Clothing Repair Specialists from 263rd Quartermaster Company, El Paso, Texas, can process nearly 500 loads of laundry per day and provide more than 300 soldiers the opportunity to shower daily. Fuel storage units can store 150,000 gallons of fuel and are estimated to deliver more than 420,000 gallons to customers during the exercise.

“This is the time that we can see what we're truly capable of,” said Sgt. 1st Class Derrell McGowan, first sergeant, 316 Quartermaster Battalion. “This is the time to have the Soldiers fully engaged.”

With the proper safety measures in place, Soldiers can make mistakes and then learn from those mistakes in this real-world environment, McGowan added.

Helping to keep the other Soldiers safe and healthy are Preventative Medicine Specialists such as Spc. Jennifer Magrath, 794th Preventative Medicine Medical Detachment.

“We do bacteria and chlorine residual testing to make sure the chlorine is adequately disinfecting the water,” said Magrath.

They also inspect the food service, shower and laundry facilities, monitor the temperature and make sure leaders follow proper work/rest cycle procedures.

In spite of near-record temperatures, U.S. Army Reserve Soldiers led by officers like Tomlin and supported by Soldiers like Magrath are remaining resilient and continuing their annual training in preparation for future combat operations.
