The makings of a hero: Chief Jaclyn Place earns 2016 Vanguard award

    CAMP PENDLETON, CA, UNITED STATES

    06.13.2016

Story by 1st Lt. Allison Burgos

    1st Marine Logistics Group

Place, who received a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation award for her actions on that fateful night in Oceanside, Calif., is the lead chief petty officer with the Headquarters Regimental Aid Station, 1st Marine Logistics Group.

The NCOA Military Vanguard Award is presented annually to a noncommissioned or petty officer from each uniformed service for an act of heroism.

Due to Place’s calm leadership, medical expertise, and decisive action, a mother and her daughter survived a violent domestic attack in their home. The severity of their injuries would likely have resulted in severe morbidity or death, if not for the quick response of Place and the Marines who assisted her.

Place’s unselfish acts of heroism and bravery on the night of November 7, 2015, were above and beyond the call of duty and reflected great credit upon her, the noncommissioned and petty officer corps, and the U.S. Armed Forces—earning this award many times over.

Each Vanguard award is named in memory and honor of a noncommissioned or petty officer recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor. Place will receive the Vanguard Award named for Machinist Mate First Class Robert R. Scott, USN, a Sailor who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Her award, as well as the Vanguard awards for the other military branches, will be presented at the NCOA Annual Business Meeting and Awards Tribute July 12-15 at the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
