MUSCATATUCK URBAN TRAINING CENTER, Ind. – With recent terror attacks across America and around the world, the question arises: how do you prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future? How do we prevent another tragedy like the hostage situation that recently occurred in Orlando, Fla.? The Evansville SWAT team seems to have the answer: training, training, and more training. The team was at the Muscatatuck Urban Training Center in Butlerville training to respond to hostage situations.
The SWAT team training consisted of breaching a hostile environment, deploying flash bangs, and securing hostages. They also worked on clearing rooms on their way toward the hostages, as well as applying tourniquets to injured hostages and removing them from the hostile environment. They focused on making sure they had every aspect of the building covered so they didn’t pass by something that could endanger them later. They then trained on assaulting multiple targets at the same time.
Spc. Joe Falsetta, of the 209th Broadcast Operations Detachment, volunteered to help them with their training by playing the role of the hostage. After being scared half to death by their intensity, Falsetta said, “It was a lot of fun to get to see how the SWAT team conducts their search and rescue missions and compare it to how they do it in the Army.” Falsetta was extremely impressed with their effectiveness. “They were right on the money,” Falsetta said. “Those guys were amazing. They took out the perpetrator, the guy who held me hostage in the scenario, with perfect aim.”
