As the U.S. Army celebrates its 241st Birthday, Human Resources Command members recognized those that served the nation by providing donations and visiting the Louisville Veterans Administration Hospital on June 14.
HRC members collected items the first two weeks of June and delivered a van full of donated men’s and women’s clothing and household items to the VA Healthcare Center in Shively, KY for assisting homeless veterans. The goal of HRC’s collection was to help veterans moving into a new place and gain a fresh start.
“I am completely humbled with the generosity shown by the Soldiers, civilians, contractors and family members from HRC who supported the initiative to donate over two thousand items to the Department of Veteran Affairs Homeless Program,” said Human Resources Commanding General, Maj. Gen. Thomas C. Seamands.
He added, “A true sign of an organization is how it treats those who have left the ranks. Your generosity is a testimony that HRC is a great organization…please know you have made our Army Stronger and taken care of our veterans.”
Seamands and Command Sgt. Maj. Wardell Jefferson also visited with veteran patients at the Louisville VA Hospital that afternoon. They listened to veterans’ memories, handed out small U.S. flags, and thanked them for their service.
HRC leaders weren't the only ones who benefited from this visit. The veterans, as well as the hospital staff, said they enjoy having military members who are currently serving to talk to.
Several patients shared the units to which they were assigned and countries they served in. Seamands and Jefferson traded stories and laughter as they served in some of the same units many years later.
“These types of events are good for both the Soldiers and veterans,” Jefferson said. “Part of being in the military is our heritage and history because it is a huge part of who we are. Soldiers, veterans, family members, civilians and community members are all part of history and the Army story.”
