JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, N.J. – Army Reserve Soldiers of the 358th Engineer Company are constructing a classroom within a building here today during training exercise Castle Installation Related Construction 2016.
The unit, which is based in New Cumberland, Pennsylvania, has a team building two partition walls to separate part of the building for a new classroom. The engineers are using metal studs, drywall and plaster to build the partition walls. Three days into the project, the team plans to complete the classroom tomorrow.
Sgt. Michael Collazo, a 358th plumber and carpenter working on the project, says patience is key when mentoring junior enlisted Soldiers. “At first it's a little challenging to not want to jump in there, but for the most part, almost the entire project has been done by lower enlisted,” said the squad leader. “We have kept them engaged, and the two or three that we established knew exactly what they're doing, we've given them their own teams.”
The York, Pennsylvania, native said giving the Soldiers their own teams helped their leadership skills and helped them bond as a squad since they learned from one another and were not being micromanaged.
The biggest challenge to the project has been initially not having the materials to complete the project, but the team used the downtime to go over the project in more detail since the junior enlisted Soldiers were not involved in the planning phase.
Spc. Joseph Delicati, a horizontal construction engineer on Collazo's team, said he thought a good leader would get down and dirty with the rest of the Soldiers, a quality he feels Collazo possesses.
“Yesterday we didn't have a transport to the motor pool, and our motor pool is a mile and a half away from our barracks so we ended up having to ruck a mile and a half,” the Soldier from Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, recounted. “Instead of getting a ride with somebody, he did it with us. He helped unload all the materials with us and helped get the project started.”
Collazo also lavished praise for his unit, squad and Soldiers. “I've been blessed to have a great unit,” he said. “Sometimes you have little refinements you want to make to the way they do things, but for the most part, I've been blessed to have this unit, and the squad works perfectly.”
