JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, N.J. – Twenty-nine Army Reserve Soldiers of 412th Engineer Company are building an archery tower at Range 14 here as part of the Castle Installation Related Construction 2016 exercise.
The 412th, based in Scranton, Pa., is here to complete their two-week annual training.
“We have a lot of new Soldiers who have just finished their job training,” said Staff Sgt. Eric Miller, a squad leader in the 412th. “This project gives us a valuable opportunity to get them some hands-on field experience.”
The project began on June 12, and is scheduled to be completed June 22.
“Civilian contractors may be able to get the job finished a little quicker, but the extra time was built into the schedule to account for unforeseen complications and to make sure we can get hands on time with all of our guys,” said Miller.
The project involves building a floor set 14 feet high on telephone poles, stairs to climb up, and a roof on top.
“We are facing a challenge from the start,” said Staff Sgt. Douglas Waldrop, the project site noncommissioned officer in charge. “The poles were put here two years ago, and they weren’t installed squarely.”
“The poles are really a blessing in disguise,” added Miller. “It just adds a complication that our Soldiers may face on other projects, so they are learning how to adjust the plans in order to complete the project successfully.”
“They have to measure and cut each individual board, instead of having all the boards the same length,” said Waldrop. “It forces them to practice good time management.”
The project includes carpenters, electricians and plumbers on staff.
“Even though there isn’t any electrician or plumber work on this project, its good cross-training so that they know how to assist their comrades should the need arise,” said Waldrop.
“It’s rewarding for us because we get to guide them as they develop their skills. It’s great to watch them grow.”
